Crops in Botswana grow gradually due to dryness and cold-weather, and this is a barrier to the achievement of a low carbon society based on . However, the nation has an abundance of wild plants that can hold up against dryness and winter season cold. It likewise has large numbers of jatropha curcas trees, whose seeds have plentiful amounts of an oil considered to hold great pledge as a biofuel. The objective of this task is to make use of these resources to establish Jatropha ranges that are resistant to dryness and cold weather condition and offer high performance, as well as to establish approaches of cultivating these ranges. In this method, a biological technique will help to achieve a low carbon society.
Creating a bioenergy production model based upon the nation's own biological resources
A database of biological resource information relating to Jatropha will be built and suitable varieties will be developed. Moreover, in this desert that undergoes winter, efforts will be made to develop a cultivation system that is versatile with respect to environment modification. The project will work to develop a sustainable bioenergy production model utilizing plant genetic resources that are indigenous to Botswana.
